Driver’s license for foreigners in Panama: What you need to know
One of the first things needed upon arrival in Panama as a foreigner is transportation. In the isthmus country, regulations to consider are established by “Sertracen”, the agency responsible for regulating and supervising land traffic and transport. “Sertracen” is known for its vital role in setting driving standards, ensuring that residents and visitors adhere to local regulations. On the ground, the agents of the land transport authority (ATT) are often responsible for traffic regulation. If you enter Panama for the first time as a tourist with a valid driver’s license from your home country, you can use it for 90 days from the date of your entry into the country.
Migration status and obtaining a license:
After obtaining a migration status, whether temporary or permanent, foreigners have two options for obtaining a Panamanian driver’s license:
If you have a driver’s license from your home country or a third country and want to homologate it, you would opt for a homologation (or exchange) procedure.
There are several ways to validate your driver’s license, depending on the origin of the license you want to authenticate, with some routes easier than others. Consult Panama Contact Services for more details.
Often, it is faster and less costly to retake the driving test in Panama. For homologation (Exchange), documents not written in Spanish must be translated and stamped by an authorized interpreter in Panama. Administrative requirements include presenting originals and copies of licenses, passports, certifications, and medical tests.
If you do not have a license or do not wish to homologate (exchange) another license, you must follow the standard process from the beginning, which means first going through a driving school certified by “Sertracen”. Panama Contact Services guides you through partner schools to prepare for this exam.
It’s necessary to understand either Spanish or English to take the exam. In Panama, the license is issued for a period of four years. However, for foreigners with temporary or provisional status, the validity of the license coincides with their residence card. Only those with permanent resident status benefit from the full four-year validity.
Limitations of licenses for foreigners:
Foreign licenses are valid for three months and allow you to drive under categories “A”, “B”, “C”, and “D”. It is not authorized to drive public transport with these license categories. Under certain conditions, after two years of a valid license, a driver can apply for other license categories.
Warning:
Initiating your migration process immediately prohibits you from using your foreign license in Panama. No longer a tourist, you no longer have the right to drive a vehicle on Panamanian soil, even if the 90-day period has not elapsed. You must wait to have a Panamanian driver’s license to drive again. During this time, it is strongly advised not to drive a vehicle. Besides a fine of $50, the police can immobilize your vehicle, and in the event of an accident, you may not be covered by your insurance.
