Digital nomad visa: come to telework in Panama!

Imagine working from the paradisiacal beaches of Santa Catalina or Bocas del Toro or enjoying the small bars of Casco Viejo for after-work? You can now do it thanks to the new short-term visa program for remote workers, designed specifically for digital nomads. The digital nomad visa of Panama will allow you to combine work and adventure without having to leave the country at the end of your tourist visa if you want to stay several months in a row in Panama. Affordable, the digital nomad visa can also be a good way to test life in the country without making a residency application in Panama. Remember, Europeans can only stay three months in a row with a tourist visa in Panama, this period is 6 months for Canadian citizens. The digital nomad visa offers you a first step to start expatriation in Panama?

Like many countries in Central and South America, Panama has decided to take advantage of the growing trend of teleworking by opening its doors to professionals wishing to discover life in a tropical country. Launched in 2021, following the COVID-19 crisis, this program aims not only to promote tourism but also to stimulate the local economy and introduce the country to young foreigners working in innovative sectors.

Duration and conditions of the digital nomad visa

The digital nomad visa was created on May 7, 2021, in response to the evolution of the world of work. It is valid for 9 months and can be extended for the same period, offering flexibility to those who want to explore Panama in depth. The visa allows teleworkers to work in Panama, provided they maintain a contract with a foreign company. Moreover, they must meet a minimum annual income of 36,000 USD.

Documents to provide:

  • Valid passport with at least 6 months of remaining validity.

  • Apostilled and translated criminal record certificate.

  • International health insurance covering Panama.

  • Sworn declaration of not accepting job offers in Panama.

  • Proof of the existence of the foreign company

  • Current work contract or proof of income from abroad (at least 36,000 balboas per year).

  • Independent applicants must provide additional proof, such as contracts with foreign clients.

Cost and duration

The visa is granted for a period of 9 months, with the possibility of extending it for an additional 9 months, renewable only once.

Note that this only applies if you have contracts with companies or clients abroad. You will not be able to be hired by a Panamanian company with this visa.

Essential tips:

Completeness and accuracy of documents are crucial. Discrepancies or errors can lead to delays or rejections of the application.

Although regulations stipulate a specific timeframe for review and approval, this period can fluctuate depending on the requirements of the national immigration service. It is advised to adopt an understanding attitude and maintain regular contact with Panama Contact Services throughout the process. Keep duplicates of all documents and supporting evidence submitted throughout the procedure.
